Quran Classes

Reciting the Quran at BKM Community Group, Manchester

We run Quran classes in Manchester for children and adults, covering reading, recitation and understanding. Students are taught at their own level, from those learning the Arabic letters for the first time through to those working on fluency and meaning.

Classes are taught in a way that suits our community, with explanation available in Urdu as well as English. Adults who never had the opportunity to study as children are particularly welcome, and are more common in our classes than most people expect.

What Is Covered

  • Recognising and pronouncing the Arabic letters
  • Reading fluently from the Quran
  • Correct recitation and the basics of Tajweed
  • Understanding the meaning of what is being recited

Enrolling

Places are limited and classes fill up, so it is worth getting in touch early. Beginners are welcome at any point in the year.

Class Times

Monday to Friday, 4pm to 6pm

These classes are free to attend.

Held at Qadria Jilania Islamic Centre, St John’s Road, Longsight, Manchester M13 0NS. Times occasionally change, so it is worth confirming before travelling.

How Students Are Taught

Students are placed at the level they are actually at, not the level their age suggests. A ten-year-old starting from the Arabic letters and a fourteen-year-old working on fluency are not put through the same material.

The progression is roughly:

  • Qaida — the Arabic letters, their sounds, and joining them
  • Reading — working through short surahs, building accuracy before speed
  • Recitation — applying the rules of Tajweed to what is already being read
  • Understanding — for older students, what the words actually mean

For Adults Who Never Learned

A significant number of adults in Manchester can pray but cannot read Quran, and feel that starting at forty is embarrassing. It is not, and you would not be the only one in the room.

Adults usually progress faster than children through the early stages, because they understand what they are doing and why. The barrier is almost never ability. It is turning up for the first time.

What Parents Should Expect

Progress is slow at first and then speeds up. The Qaida stage feels like nothing is happening for weeks, then reading arrives quite suddenly.

Ten minutes daily at home beats an hour on Sunday. This is the single largest difference between children who progress and children who do not, and it is entirely in the parents’ hands.

Do not use Quran as a punishment. “Go and read Quran” said in anger attaches the wrong feeling to the right thing, sometimes permanently.

Sessions for Sisters

Dedicated classes for sisters are held separately. Ask when you enquire and we will tell you the current arrangement.

Why the Classes Are Free

Cost stops people starting, and it stops precisely the families who would gain most. The classes run on volunteer time and community donations. If you can contribute either, we would be glad to hear from you.
