BKM Community Group — Bazm e Khizr e Milat — is a community organisation based in Manchester, working in partnership with GMPA. We serve the Muslim community across Manchester and the surrounding area through education, worship, and practical support for families.
Our Name, and Where It Comes From
BKM Community Group takes its name from Bazm-e-Khizr-e-Millat — and that name comes from a person.
Peer Syed Khizar Hussain Chishti, known as Khizr-e-Millat, established this work in Mandi Bahauddin, Pakistan. He has since passed away. May Allah have mercy on him.
He was a writer as well as a teacher, and several of his books are available to read free on this website:
- Fazail-e-Ghusl — fifteen narrations on the merits of purification
- Fazail-e-Hajj — the merits of Hajj, set out in the light of Quran and hadith
- Husn-e-Rasool ﷺ — on the beauty and description of the Prophet ﷺ
- Khizr-e-Millat — an account of his own life
They were published in Urdu by Maktaba Chishtia, Rahim Yar Khan, under the auspices of Shah Chiragh Academy, Mandi Bahauddin. You can read them on our books page.
The Manchester branch continues that work here. When we teach Quran to a child in Longsight on a Tuesday afternoon, it is the same work, carried on in a different city.
What We Do
Most of our work falls into three areas.
Education. We run free Arabic and Urdu classes for adults and young people aged 14 and over, at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Alongside these we offer free Urdu tuition for children, with maths, science and English tuition available for a small fee. We also run Quran classes and beginners Tajweed sessions, including dedicated classes for sisters.
Guidance and advice. Through BKM Consultancy we help students navigate university and college admissions, including course selection, funding and applications. We also assist families with matrimonial introductions and provide support with funeral arrangements in accordance with Islamic tradition.
Community support. We organise gatherings throughout the year, distribute food and essentials to families facing hardship, and run campaigns supporting those in need both locally and further afield.
Who We Serve
Our community is largely Pakistani and South Asian in heritage, and our classes are taught in a way that reflects that, with Urdu and Arabic both available. But nobody is turned away, and we welcome anyone who wants to learn, attend a gathering, or ask a question.
A significant part of what we do is aimed at people who might otherwise have no route in: adults who never had the chance to study Arabic, parents who cannot afford private tuition for their children, students who are the first in their family to apply to university, and families going through bereavement without knowing where to begin.
Why the Classes Are Free
Our Arabic and Urdu classes carry no fee, and our Urdu tuition for children carries no fee either. This is deliberate.
Cost is one of the most common reasons people never begin studying, and it falls hardest on exactly the families who would benefit most. Removing it removes the excuse and the barrier at the same time. The classes are made possible by volunteers who give their time and by donations from the community.
Get Involved
There is always more to do than there are hands to do it. We welcome volunteers who can teach, help at events, assist with transport, or simply be reliable when something needs doing. If you have a skill and some time, we would like to hear from you.
If you would like to enrol in a class, attend a gathering, volunteer, or ask about any of our services, please contact us. You can also see our full list of services or our current campaigns.
How We Are Constituted and Funded
BKM Community Group is a constituted community organisation run by its members and volunteers. Its governing document names it in full as Bazm-e-Khizar-e-Millat Educational and Cultural Group, and was adopted on 29 November 2019.
It is not currently registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, and does not hold registered charity status.
One thing worth stating plainly, because our governing document is published here and anyone can read it: that document sets out objects focused on education and cultural work with young women and girls. The wider work described on this page — classes for all ages, funeral support, gatherings, help for families in hardship — is carried out by the organisation and its volunteers for the whole community. If you have a question about how any of it is governed or funded, ask us and we will answer.
We state that plainly because people reasonably assume otherwise of an organisation that runs free classes and helps families in hardship. Two things follow from it: donations to us are not eligible for Gift Aid and we do not claim it, and we are not subject to Charity Commission regulation. If you want to know how a contribution has been used, ask us and we will tell you.
Everything here is funded by the community itself — by people who give time, and by donations handled directly by the organisation rather than through this website. Our governing document is published in full on our constitution page.
