Each year at Eid al-Adha we coordinate Qurbani on behalf of families in our community who wish to fulfil this obligation but cannot arrange it themselves.
What Qurbani Is
Qurbani is the sacrifice offered during Eid al-Adha, commemorating the willingness of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, to give up what was most precious to him at his Lord’s command.
A few points that come up every year:
- It is performed on the tenth, eleventh or twelfth of Dhu al-Hijjah — after the Eid prayer, not before it.
- In the Hanafi school it is wajib on every adult Muslim who possesses wealth at or above the nisab on those days.
- A sheep or goat counts as one share. A cow or camel counts as seven, so seven people may share one animal.
- The meat is traditionally divided three ways — the household, relatives and neighbours, and those in need. That division is recommended rather than obligatory, but it is where the spirit of the practice sits.
- Nothing from the animal may be given to the butcher as payment for the slaughter.
How Our Service Works
We handle the arrangements on your behalf and ensure the animal is slaughtered according to Islamic requirements. Meat is distributed with a share going to families in need, in keeping with the intention behind the practice.
Numbers have to be confirmed with the supplier in advance of Eid, so registering early helps considerably — late requests are often impossible to add.
Before You Register
Two things worth deciding beforehand: whether you are offering one share or several, and on whose behalf. Households often want a share per adult; families sometimes include a share on behalf of a deceased relative, which is permitted.
If you are unsure whether Qurbani is obligatory on you this year, ask — it depends on your wealth on those specific days, not on your income across the year.
