Tajweed is the science of reciting the Quran correctly: how each letter is articulated, where sounds are lengthened, and where a reciter should pause. Our beginners Tajweed classes in Manchester are designed for people who can already read the Quran but want to recite it properly.

We run dedicated sessions for sisters, taught by female teachers.

Why It Needs a Teacher

Tajweed cannot be learned reliably from books or videos, because you cannot hear your own mistakes. A learner mispronouncing a letter believes they are saying it correctly. Only someone listening can catch it, which is why recitation has always been passed on face to face.

Who It Is For

Complete beginners in Tajweed are exactly who these classes exist for. Adults often assume they have left it too late to correct habits formed decades ago. They have not, though it takes patience.

What Tajweed Actually Covers

Tajweed is not a decorative style of recitation. It is the set of rules governing how the Quran is pronounced — and getting them wrong can change meaning, which is why they matter.

• Makharij — where in the mouth and throat each letter is formed. Several Arabic letters have no English equivalent and are routinely merged by English speakers
• Sifat — the qualities of each letter: heavy or light, whispered or voiced
• Madd — how long a vowel is held, and the counts that apply
• Ghunnah — the nasal sound, and where it belongs
• Waqf — where to stop, and where stopping changes the sense

Why You Need a Teacher

This is the one part of Islamic learning that genuinely cannot be done from a book or an app. You cannot hear your own pronunciation accurately, and the errors you make are precisely the ones you cannot detect. Someone has to listen and correct you.

The Quran was transmitted this way from the beginning — heard and repeated, not read off a page.

Who These Classes Are For

These are beginners classes for people who can already read the Quran but know they are not reciting it correctly. If you cannot yet read Arabic script, start with our Quran classes and come to Tajweed afterwards.

Realistic Expectations

Adult learners often expect to fix years of habit in a few weeks. In practice the makharij alone take months, because you are retraining muscles that have done it another way for a long time.

What changes quickly is awareness. Within a few sessions most people start hearing errors they had never noticed — in their own recitation and in others. That is the point at which improvement becomes possible.
