We hold health awareness sessions for the Manchester community, focusing on issues that affect our members and that are not always well understood or comfortably discussed.
Why This Matters Here
Some health risks fall unevenly. People of South Asian background in the UK develop type 2 diabetes at significantly higher rates than the general population, and often at a younger age and a lower body weight than the standard guidance assumes. Cardiovascular disease follows a similar pattern.
None of that is inevitable. But it does mean that advice written for the general population can understate the risk, and that a symptom worth acting on at fifty may be worth acting on at forty here.
Topics We Cover
- Diabetes and heart health — risk factors, what the numbers in a blood test mean, and what actually changes them
- Getting the most from the NHS — registering with a GP, what the free NHS Health Check covers and who is eligible, using 111, and asking for an interpreter, which you are entitled to
- Mental health — recognising when someone is struggling, and where help exists that does not require a crisis first
- Fasting with a health condition — Ramadan and diabetes in particular, where a medication review well before the month usually matters more than anything decided during it
- Caring for elderly parents — what social care assessments are and how to ask for one
Sessions are run in plain language with Urdu explanation available, and questions are welcome. Nobody is asked to discuss their own health in front of the room.
What This Is Not
We provide information and signposting, not medical advice. Nothing said at a session replaces a conversation with your GP, and we will always say so. If something is worrying you, please make an appointment.
Coming to a Session
Sessions are open to everyone and there is no charge. For details of what is coming up, see our events page or contact us. If there is a topic you would like covered, tell us — most of what we run started as a request from someone in the community.
Enquire about this service
Please tell us which session you are interested in, or a topic you would like us to cover. We will confirm current times, the venue and anything else you need to know when you get in touch.
