Facilities & Building Upkeep

Our premises need to stay safe, clean and welcoming for the classes, gatherings and prayers that happen there every week. Maintaining them is unglamorous work that makes everything else possible.

What This Covers

• Repairs and maintenance — the roof, the plumbing, the things that fail without warning
• Heating, lighting and running costs, which in a large hall through a Manchester winter are the single largest recurring expense
• Teaching spaces — keeping rooms suitable for children and adults, with tables, boards and storage that work
• Cleaning and washing facilities, including wudu areas, which get heavy use and wear out fast
• Accessibility — step-free access, seating for those who cannot sit on the floor, and a seated wudu position for elderly and disabled attendees
• Safety — fire equipment, electrical checks and the certification a building used by the public has to keep current

Why It Is Worth Saying Out Loud

People give readily to feed a family or sponsor a class. Almost nobody wakes up wanting to fund a boiler service.

But a class cannot run in a cold room, an elderly member will stop coming if there is nowhere to sit, and a building that falls behind on its safety obligations cannot open at all. This is the least visible part of what the organisation does and the part everything else depends on.

How to Help

Two things are useful. The first is money, and regular small contributions are worth more to this than occasional large ones, because the costs are themselves regular.

The second is skill. If you are an electrician, a plumber, a joiner, a decorator or a cleaner and could give occasional time, please say so — that kind of help stretches considerably further than its cash value.

Why This Page Exists

Building upkeep is the least appealing thing to ask for money towards. Nobody feels moved by a boiler. But every class, every gathering and every janazah prayer on this website depends on a building that is warm, safe and clean, and that does not happen by itself.

What This Actually Covers

• Heating — a hall in Manchester in January is unusable without it, and it is the single largest running cost
• Repairs — roof, plumbing, electrics, doors, flooring
• Cleaning — carpets in a prayer space need doing properly and often
• Wudu facilities — the part that gets the heaviest use and wears out first
• Safety compliance — fire equipment, electrical testing, and the checks a building used by the public has to pass
• Accessibility — making sure elderly and disabled members can actually get in and use the facilities

Sadaqah Jariya

Contributions towards a building used for worship and teaching are the standard example of sadaqah jariya — continuing charity, which keeps benefiting the giver as long as the benefit continues. Every prayer prayed in a room you helped keep open is part of that.

It is worth saying because people reasonably prefer to give towards food or children’s education, where the effect is visible. The effect here is just as real; it is simply harder to photograph.

Giving Time Instead of Money

A great deal of this work is done by members who turn up and do it. If you have a trade — electrical, plumbing, joinery, decorating — a few hours is worth more to us than a donation, and we will always ask before paying a contractor.

Unskilled help is just as welcome. Setting up and clearing away after gatherings is constant, and it is the easiest way to become part of this community rather than a visitor to it.
