Shelter is the need that has to be met before any other can be addressed. Someone without a secure place to sleep cannot hold down work, keep a child in school, or recover from illness.

What This Appeal Does

It contributes toward shelter provision for families and individuals who have lost their housing, both through our own local support and through partners working in areas of greater need.

Why It Matters

Providing shelter is among the acts the tradition holds in highest regard, precisely because of how much else depends on it. It is also among the least visible: families in temporary accommodation tend to stay quiet about it, and the difficulty is easy to miss from the outside.

How People End Up Needing This

Emergency housing need is usually sudden. A relationship breaks down, a tenancy ends, a family flees violence, or someone arrives in the city with nowhere arranged. The common factor is that it happens faster than any system can respond.

The first 48 hours matter more than anything that follows. A family placed somewhere safe immediately can start dealing with the underlying problem. A family left without that spends those days in crisis and often loses ground they never recover.

What Support Can Cover

• Immediate temporary accommodation
• Deposits and rent in advance — frequently the single barrier between a family and a tenancy
• Essentials for a home started from nothing: bedding, kitchen basics, a cooker
• Help approaching the council and understanding what it is obliged to provide

A Note on Council Duties

Local authorities in England have statutory duties towards people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness within 56 days, and those duties are stronger where children are involved. Many families do not know this and do not approach the council at all.

We are not a housing advice service and we will refer you to one where that is what you need — but we can help you make the approach and go with you.

Zakat or Sadaqah?

If you are giving zakat, please say so when you contact us. Zakat has eight categories of eligible recipient set out in the Quran (9:60), cannot be spent on running costs, and we keep it separate and account for it separately. Sadaqah is not restricted in the same way.

We do not take card payments through this website. Every donation involves a conversation, which means you can ask exactly where the money is going and get a straight answer before you give anything. It is slower, and for an organisation of our size we think it is better.
