Clean water is the starting point for health, dignity and education, and its absence shapes everything else in a household’s life. Where there is no safe supply nearby, the burden of fetching it falls most often on women and children, and school is usually what gives way.

What This Appeal Does

It contributes toward safe water provision in communities without reliable access, working through partners on the ground rather than administering projects ourselves.

Why Water

Providing a water source is one of the clearest examples of sadaqah jariyah — ongoing charity. A meal meets a need today. A well keeps meeting it long after the giver has stopped thinking about it, and in the tradition the reward continues for as long as people benefit.

Why Water Comes First

Water is the appeal people find hardest to feel strongly about, because in Manchester it is the thing you least have to think about. It is also the one that changes the most.

Where a household has no nearby clean supply, the effects run well past thirst. Waterborne illness keeps recurring, so people are repeatedly unwell and cannot work. Collection takes hours and falls mostly to women and girls — which is why girls are often the first to be taken out of school. A single reliable source removes several problems at once.

The Tradition Behind It

Providing water is the example most often given for sadaqah jariya, continuing charity — the benefit keeps accruing as long as people keep drinking from it. Sa’d ibn Ubadah asked the Prophet ﷺ which charity was best after his mother’s death, and was told: water.

What Contributions Go Towards

• Wells and hand pumps where there is no accessible source
• Repairing existing sources that have failed — often far cheaper than new construction and just as useful
• Storage and filtration where water exists but is not safe

Repairs are unglamorous and rarely attract donations, which is precisely why we mention them. A broken pump serving a village that already relies on it is usually the highest-value thing money can fix.

Zakat or Sadaqah?

If you are giving zakat, please say so when you contact us. Zakat has eight categories of eligible recipient set out in the Quran (9:60), cannot be spent on running costs, and we keep it separate and account for it separately. Sadaqah is not restricted in the same way.

We do not take card payments through this website. Every donation involves a conversation, which means you can ask exactly where the money is going and get a straight answer before you give anything. It is slower, and for an organisation of our size we think it is better.
