Arabic & Urdu Classes

We run free Arabic and Urdu classes in Manchester for anyone aged 14 and over, male and female, at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

Class Times

• Wednesday: 6–8pm
• Sunday: 12–2pm

Classes are taught using structured teaching methods, and students are placed at the level that suits them rather than being put through a single fixed syllabus.

Why Free

Cost stops many people from ever starting, and it stops precisely the families who would gain most. Removing the fee removes the barrier. The classes run on volunteer time and community donations.

For Children

We also run free Urdu tuition for children Monday to Friday, 4pm to 6pm, with maths, science and English tuition available at the same times for a small fee.

What Each Level Covers

Beginner — the alphabet and script, reading and writing, basic vocabulary and simple sentences. No prior knowledge assumed.

Intermediate — grammar properly, wider vocabulary, reading short texts, holding a conversation.

Advanced — longer texts, more complex grammar, and for Arabic, working towards reading Quranic and classical material directly.

Which Language, and Why

Arabic is the language of the Quran. Learning it is a long project and nobody should be told otherwise — but even a limited grasp changes the experience of salah, because you begin recognising words rather than reciting sounds.

Urdu matters for a different reason. In a great many Manchester households the grandparents’ strongest language is Urdu and the grandchildren’s is English, and the two cannot have a real conversation. That loss is not only linguistic. It is a family losing access to its own memory.

For Adults Starting From Nothing

Adults often assume language learning is for children. For grammar and structure the opposite is usually true — adults understand what a case ending is doing and progress faster through the early stages.

What adults lack is time, which is why the sessions are short, weekly, and do not set large amounts of homework. Consistency over a year beats intensity over a month.

Places are limited. Tell us which language, roughly what level you are at, and whether it is for you or a family member — we will place you accordingly. If you are unsure of your level, that is normal and we will work it out with you.
